I got Racked.

If you haven’t already been bombarded with this – there is no escape.

Last week I was featured on Racked LA as a “Glam Pro”. This is kind of a big deal and I’d love it if you checked it out. After all – there is no such thing as bad publicity, right?

I’ll make it worth your while with all the product recommends and an exfoliant recipe you can make in your home because you already have the ingredients. Swearsies!

Here’s a little taste…

The photographer, Elizabeth Daniels, and I had a little too much fun at Naimie’s that day. Now she’s got a whole new beauty regime and I’m super excited about it.

Special thanks to Natalie de Groot for giving me a shirt from her new line, Nat+J, for the shoot.

And, of course, big love to Kat Odell for whoring me. ♥

Top 5 Eyeliners and how to use them.

My mum’s been wearing the same makeup for as long as I could remember.

Mother. Au naturel…bar the liner/mascara. Don’t tell her I posted this because she’ll always find something wrong with it.

When I was a little girl I sat watching her intently every morning while she applied those two jet black lines on her eyeballs. This always followed by mascara, naturally. Which always followed by de-clumping with a needle. A fucking needle! Mind you, back in the day, in what was the Soviet Union, the mascara she used came with a brush so big that would be better maneuvered around a shoe; the pot of mascara wasn’t far off either.

La_Femme_Cake_Mascara

Not too far off from something like this cake mascara. Apparently they’re still around for those that love to build up their lashes.

Anyway, she was so quick and proficient with these liner flicks that it looked easy enough for anyone to do. Years later, now residents of the US, I got my little hands on mum’s American liquid liner and decided to give it a go while she was away at work.

Fail.

Determined to make it happen, I would spend hours of class time in high school, particularly my Biology class with Mr. Beeftink (such a great name) painting mine and anyone else’s face. Practicing. Perfecting.

There was a moment I thought I was Gwen Stefani, wore track pants and crop tops and thought white liner peeking right above black liner was the shit. I swear I’ve seen people try to do this in the past year and it makes me pee my pants.

Now, I can’t imagine life without eye liner…

liner

Clearly I’m a fan of red lipstick too.

There are so many textures and ways you can manipulate them. Under shadow or above it. Fat. Skinny. Long. Geometric. Metallic. Gel. Cream. Top. Bottom. Whatever position you like, my dear. The list goes on and on.

Some of the beauties I’ve lined.

Without further adieu, here are my faves:

smashbox-jet-set-waterproof-eye-liner

Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner – gel liner that was recently reworked. This stuff is just plain fucking awesome. Though it stays on through tears and sweat, you can always manipulate from a sleek line to buffing a smokey texture. My recent fave is the Dark Brown which is amazing on hazel and blue eyeballs. $22

Merle Norman ProPenEyeLiner

Merle Norman Pro Pen Eyeliner – is just like using a marker/pen. It glides on super smooth and leaves the perfect line. Having something so easily maneuverable is perfect for anyone looking for liner practice. It only comes in Sharp Black  and it really is just that, sharp. $15

126

Milani Liquid Eye – can be found at your local Walgreens/CVS/Target. Brownie point numero uno. Fits into every budget – 2 points. Their blues are electric and glide on beautifully – 3 points. Won’t smudge – 4 points. Paraben-free – gold star. $6.99

Cos25b_1_Large

L’Oreal Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner – is what my mum wears every day. It’s what I used to wear when eyeliner came on my teenage angst-y radar. A drugstore staple. Great for sensitive eyes and lasts up to 8 hours. $9.79

_6811886Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Primatif – my all time favourite pencil liner. I’m obsessed with the way this bad boy glides on and stays. My leaky water line has never created crease goop in the corner of my eye after wearing it for hours like some others. Dark like a kohl and available in 7 colours. $26

If you don’t wear eyeliner because you are afraid to look like an earthquake hit when you were applying, here are some tips:

  • don’t try to create a long line, shorter staccato strokes will do the trick
  • if your eyes naturally slant downward on the outer corners you probably shouldn’t wear liner on the water line because it will accentuate the droopyness, but you’ll definitely benefit from a cat eye
  • white liner on the water line widens smaller eyes
  • take a q-tip to your liner [not liquid] and smudge for a softer look
  • when applying, keep your eyes open if you can so that you can balance both sides of the face
  • have fun, you won’t learn any other way

Vanessa Marano at Variety

I’ve recently had the pleasure of working with this lovely lady. You’ve seen her on Dexter as John Lithgow’s daughter, which happens to be my favourite season. And for the past few years she’s the lead in ABC’s Switched at Birth.

Very excited to share pictures of the shoot Marc Cartwright and I did with her, but until then – let’s dissect the look I worked on with her for the Variety & Women in Film Pre Emmy Party on Friday…

Here is the pretty girl in her pretty lace dress:

Variety & Women In Film Pre-Emmy Event presented by Yoplait Greek - ArrivalsAnd here is a close up of our makeup/hair combo:

Variety & Women In Film Pre-Emmy Event presented by Yoplait Greek - Red Carpet

To veer away from the prom look that’s so easily accomplished with “perfect hair” in this dress silhouette, we decided to let the hair be a little wild with just enough control so that it doesn’t poof at a tiny whiff of humidity.

Because we had a bunch of product from our shoot the day before already in the hair, I told Vanessa not to wash it out. On dark hair – dirty is great for manageability. In order to refresh the roots I used Bumble and Bumble Tonic Lotion and to soak up moisture Bangstyle Sea Salt Mist all over.

bangstyle bumble

After a quick blow dry, I slathered Vanessa’s locks with TiGi S Factor Smoothing Lusterizer to ensure that her night is frizz-less and full of shine.

Smoothing Lusterizer

As for her face, this girl barely needs anything to look like a million bucks! We mostly concentrated on skin care with Rodial Glamoxy Exfoliating Pads [I’m obsessed with these] – dead skin is gently wiped away leaving behind an incredible luster and perfect canvas for makeup application.

Next, I combined Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream with Manna Kadar Sheer Glow Lotion for the ultimate healthy skin illumination.

smashbox-camera-ready-bb-cream-spf-35

The glow was set with Dior Matte and Luminous Hydrating powder in gold. This stuff has just the right of shimmer and the perfect amount of matte where you need it.

Eyeballs were treated with Lash Republic individual lashes variating from short to medium. This is my preferred brand. The quality is incredible.

I married the same man twice. Part I.

Without m̶a̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶g̶a̶g̶ boring you with the details, I have been falling in love harder and deeper with the same human for the past four years. Now I get to call him my husband. It’s pretty awesome.

FLASH

Us.

Our first celebration came the day after gay marriage became legal in the state of California, which is the most amazing because now my mothers in law can get married as soon as they move here. [I tried to make it a double wedding.] The ceremony lasted a whopping 41 seconds and instead of your usual you-may-now-kiss-the-bride, our officiator Master Hooker – it really says that on our Marriage Certificate – told us “you may now slap a bitch” which followed by high fives to seal the deal.

Our beautiful friend Holly came from Chicago an made my gorgeous flower crown.

We are family.

This all went down flash mob style. Anyone who was interested in coming was given a place and a time to show up. Place was a scenic point next to the Griffith Observatory, which happens to be our favourite place in LA. Time was right before sunset. We thought this would be a tiny event of 5 of us, but turned out to be over 20 because for some reason we have friends that like us. And some friends thought this event was important enough for them to fly to. We are some lucky fuckers.

Zoe and Gasper trekked from Portola Valley and moved to Dublin just a couple of days after. ❤

Our loves Julian, Shanna and Jenna road tripped from Tucson.

As soon as everyone was hugged we went to stuff our faces at a delicious, low key, neighborhood haunt where libations were flowing and faces were smiling. This followed by a drunken game of Cards Against Humanity at ours.

But this wouldn’t be a beauty blog without me telling you what I used on my face and hair, right? Right.

Eye Want | Vous Voulez des Yeux

In 2009 I was a fucking mess. I lived in Chicago. Was barely working. Smoking at least one pack a day. My shit marriage was coming to an end and I was down to 98lbs. I know, teenage-boy-chic.

Stress + smoking = lines and dark circles under the eye area = FML.

Fast forward four years later…I live in sunnyalways Los Angeles, working my healthy size 2 arse off, smoke-free for nearly two years and plotting a memorable wedding with the best friend I’m going to marry. I know, I’m shitting happiness rainbows.

Even though life is good – I’ve had to work at removing those pesky lines and circles, but I didn’t go through it alone. And now I’d love to introduce you to my little helpers!

Chidoriya Serum

Chidoriya‘s Brightening Eye Serum is like a cocktail that prevents any further damage and slows the ageing process. On the oily side, but *super* light. This stuff doesn’t have an odor and dries in unison with the eye cream of your choice. I totally need to restock. $23.99

ultrasmoothing-eye-serum_163-01_590x617If you’re looking for a non-oily eye serum then look no further than Dermalogica‘s new Ultrasmoothing Eye Serum. Whatever your age or texture – this tube will keep on giving the goodness. Feels like a cooling eye mask that’s not greasy or sticky. Non-irritating. Refreshing. Just right. $50

paula's choice

A newbie I’ve fallen for is this Paula’s Choice RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum. A one-stop-shop to snap your ocular area back to when the two of you were in love. Clear but dense and feels brilliant, like it’s doing business. You can’t and won’t resist it. $31.95

Strivectin

Having been a loyal fan of this brand for the past four years, there is nothing bad I could ever say about StriVectin-SD. Nothing. The Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles, and any other product for that matter, does exactly what it promises – a real life Photoshop Magic Eraser. See for yourself. $65

gm_collin_phyto_stem_cell_eye_contour_cream

A recent favourite brand of mine. The whole line is pure luxury, but this Phyto Stem Cell + Eye Contour cream from G. M. Collin is the bee’s knees! I fell in love from the first pump. Pampering is the first word that comes to mind when thinking of my eyeballs slathered in this cream. $90

murad

Another newbie goodie two shoes. I’ve never used a Murad product I didn’t like. A velvety cream that brightens within minutes of being applied? What?! #superhappenned Instant Radience Eye Cream is the way forward if you are impatient. I know know how they do it!  $68

Stop crying, it won’t make you any younger looking. Go buy something!

An Oscars Moment | Un moment Oscars

Sunday morning was TONS of fun for me!

My friend, the celebrity stylist, Colin Megaro hooked me up with two talented women who were nominees for short film at the Oscars.

Gudrun Austli (producer) and Linn-Jeanethe Kyed (writer) were recognized for a STUDENT film! Can you imagine?

The Norwegian beauties were such a treat to work with and although they didn’t walk away with a golden statue – they are forever penned in the book as legends.

There, in the ladies’ washroom of the ballroom at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, we rocked out to the Drive soundtrack whilst primping for the huge event…

Gudrun Austli

Linn-Jeanethe Kyed

Happy girls!

If you speak Norwegian or know how to use Google Translate check this out.

And a video interview with the director, Hallvar Witzo.

Check out this teaser for the film…

If you want to see the full movie you can get it on iTunes!

Remove | Supprimer

I have found a makeup remover that surpasses all others. FINALLY!

Behold! Salma Hayek’s Nuance Dual Phase Makeup Remover exclusively at CVS.

This stuff is MAGIC, unlike the shitty picture…the best one I could find.

It removes, literally, everything. [Even stuff you’d need a power sander for.] Waterproof eyeliner and mascara? Off. Red stained lips from last night’s debacherous extravaganza? Gone.

Smells light and calming. Leaves skin hydrated and supple. The packaging is absolutely perfect – none of the product goes to waste because of it’s ergonomically designed bottle tip, plus you don’t need much to take off a lot. Trust.

It won’t make your eyes turn red of filmy. You won’t break out in hives and neither will your catdoggerbil hybrid. Oh, and the ingredients are so awesome you can, probably, eat/drink them even if you’re gluten free!

Cucumber, rosewater, chamomile & lavender extracts nurture and soothe the delicate eye area. Mimosa, blue agave, camapu & prickly pear extracts soothe, hydrate and firm skin. Glycerin, a lightweight moisturizer, softens and hydrates skin and lips. Ophthalmologist tested. Dermatologist tested. Not tested on animals. Fragrance free. Hypoallergenic. Gluten free.

Go get yours now! I promise you won’t be disappointed.
