Vanessa Marano at Variety

I’ve recently had the pleasure of working with this lovely lady. You’ve seen her on Dexter as John Lithgow’s daughter, which happens to be my favourite season. And for the past few years she’s the lead in ABC’s Switched at Birth.

Very excited to share pictures of the shoot Marc Cartwright and I did with her, but until then – let’s dissect the look I worked on with her for the Variety & Women in Film Pre Emmy Party on Friday…

Here is the pretty girl in her pretty lace dress:

To veer away from the prom look that’s so easily accomplished with “perfect hair” in this dress silhouette, we decided to let the hair be a little wild with just enough control so that it doesn’t poof at a tiny whiff of humidity.

Because we had a bunch of product from our shoot the day before already in the hair, I told Vanessa not to wash it out. On dark hair – dirty is great for manageability. In order to refresh the roots I used Bumble and Bumble Tonic Lotion and to soak up moisture Bangstyle Sea Salt Mist all over.

After a quick blow dry, I slathered Vanessa’s locks with TiGi S Factor Smoothing Lusterizer to ensure that her night is frizz-less and full of shine.

As for her face, this girl barely needs anything to look like a million bucks! We mostly concentrated on skin care with Rodial Glamoxy Exfoliating Pads [I’m obsessed with these] – dead skin is gently wiped away leaving behind an incredible luster and perfect canvas for makeup application.

Next, I combined Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream with Manna Kadar Sheer Glow Lotion for the ultimate healthy skin illumination.

The glow was set with Dior Matte and Luminous Hydrating powder in gold. This stuff has just the right of shimmer and the perfect amount of matte where you need it.

Eyeballs were treated with Lash Republic individual lashes variating from short to medium. This is my preferred brand. The quality is incredible.

I married the same man twice. Part II.

And then, less than two months later our wed-cation dreams came to fruition.

All we wanted was an intimate evening on the beach, at sunset, on the night of a full moon, with our closest. No frills. This we received.

We found the most incredible location on an island called Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Think hot tub temperature ocean and sand that feels like powdered sugar under your feet. Think smiling faces every day. Think fresh seafood off the fisherman’s boat at 2pm daily. Think driving around with a beer in hand [legally]. Think paradise.

Eleuthera is 100mi long and only 1.5mi wide.

Governor’s Harbour at night.

Friends and family came from all over and everyone got along. We pushed everyone to enjoy their time on the island however they saw fit. There were no rules. There were no schedules. We’d explore the island by day and relax by the pool at night with a local Bahamian coconut rum [that I smuggled two bottles of on the way home] in hand.

The wedding was on a Tuesday. Some people showed up to swim and hang on our beach during the day. Some people cooked. Some people drank. Some people helped with decorations.

Mammaries…

Around 7pm everyone walked down to the beach and awaited our entrance. We came right on time and began the ceremony, once again, led by Master Hooker. Everyone contributed a word they would use to describe us. Then Josh and I exchanged our words of love to each other. Then Hooker introduced us to a Bahamian wedding tradition of Josh and I filling half a cup of sand and pooling it into one. It was perfect. Everyone was tear faced and laughing.

GROUP BAHAMAS WEDDING

Everyone and the moon.

We asked all of our guests to contribute a dish for the evening as everyone we invited is an excellent cook and the one person that wasn’t a foodie turned out to be the best mixologist any of us could have hoped for. Viva de piña colada by the pitcher [pineapple free for me, please]! We even had THREE wedding cakes instead of just one. Everyone was in a food coma.

Renee made this with Angela’s and Jenn’s accessories. Stars are Josh’s and my theme for life.

He started it.

After the food we moved onto “Club Pool” and danced in and out of water and set off sky lanterns with wishes of the future. Our incredible guests made sure everything was perfect and that we were happy. Couldn’t have asked for anything more. We, again, are very lucky bitches.

It’s time, once again, for products!

Purple Dior | Pourpre Dior

Have you heard? My new hair is now…

So, of course I’m partial to this new limited edition collection from Dior called “Les Violets Hypnotiques”. [Yes, like the others – start packing your tents for the summer launch.]

Not only are there three gorgeous shades of nail polish [two of which I’m currently mix-matching on my fingers and toes], but there is also a mascara, eyeshadow and gloss involved. #purpleoverload

The past two and a half weeks have been full of travel/work for me and I hadn’t had time to update my mani-pedi, but these polishes have been hanging on with their dear lives. I’ve never seen anything like it [aside from gels, which I’m not into because they’re bulky and I’m afraid of commitment when it comes to my nails]. With all the work I’ve put my hands through, the chipping is minimal.

As for the mascara – I’m not usually one for anything other than brown or black, but I must say receiving countless compliments on my hazel ojos when mixed with a shade of plum on my lashes did make me think twice. #forthewin

Must I really talk about the quality of the shadows? Didn’t think so.

And the lipgloss, as usual, is gorgeous and smooth. Reapplication is, again, minimal. #bangforyourbuck

So when these babies hit stores you should be ready knowing what to request:

Diorshow Extase Mascara in Plum #871

Dior 3-Couleurs Smokey Eyeshadow in Smoky Violet #961

Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Draped Lilac #582

Dior Vernis Shadow #783

Dior Vernis Orchid #981

Dior Vernis Poison #996 [personal favourite]

Hope your sleeping bags are comfy!

Stay, Valentine! | Tenez, la Saint-Valentin!

Today’s the day that many of you will get f̶u̶c̶k̶e̶d̶ laid, cry or indulge in stuffing of the a̶n̶a̶l̶ oral cavity. Sounds like a typical Tuesday for some of you, doesn’t it?

Either way, which ever cavity you prefer you get stuffed in or produce liquid out of, you’ll need waterproof/long-lasting tools to still look pretty  i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶r̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ at the finish line.

Hands down, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid and Smudge Stick Waterproof liners are the bee’s knees. The liquid is so waterproof – you’ll need a Brillo pad to scrub it off. And the smudge stick won’t tug the skin like the other creepy perpetrators. L̶e̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶t̶u̶g̶g̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶u̶n̶d̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶t̶a̶b̶l̶e̶.̶

Lancome Definicils High Definition Waterproof mascara won’t budge even if you h̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶g̶a̶g̶ ̶r̶e̶f̶l̶e̶x̶ get dumped on this special day by your one and only true love or you’re just, plain hormonal. Si triste.

Yummy NARS lipstick will moisturize whilst attaching it’s sexy, bad self to your lippers. Feel free to g̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶d̶ ̶v̶i̶g̶o̶r̶o̶u̶s̶l̶y̶ eat what ever you like and test the staying power for yourself. Try these sexy shades: Afghan Red, Heat Wave, Jungle Red and Manhunt.

What am I doing today? Same thing I do every day – WORKING. I get my sexin’ on holiday or not. Pfft.

Lashes

Fiber Lashes | Fibre de Cils

If you love your tiny, puny, scarce eyelashes – we shouldn’t be friends.

We should be friends if you love the black goo from your mascara spoolie so much that you slather it on maniacally, taking turns between eyelash curlers and Q-tips. We should be friends if you love the look of [well applied] fake lashes but don’t have the time or energy to adhere them every day. We should be friends if the idea of eyelash extensions makes you weep on the inside because you’d do it in a heartbeat if it didn’t mean losing the few precious ones you own naturally in the long run.

I present to you…

L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lash Mascara

Whilst visiting my nearest CVS with some family from out of town, I spotted this bad boy on sale and, naturally, nabbed it off the shelf and straight into my red shopping basket.

That was two weeks ago. Between then and now – I haven’t spent a day without coating my cils in this shiz. Two words: DOLL EYES! I love ’em and they’re all mine.

Though I was a wee bit put off by the clumpy spoolie, it distributes the colour evenly leaving my lashes thick and long (that’s what she said). At the end of the day/night washing off makeup with a gentle cleanser there is almost no need for makeup remover! Brownie points. My only complaint is that throughout the day there is some flaking happening under the eyes if I do a coat on the bottom lashes. Otherwise – smooth sailings.

To summarize, this is a long-overdue-blessing for ladies who don’t want to spend $30+ on fancy fiber mascaras or have the option more than a drugstore on their home turf.

Rejoice, girls!

Lashes, Milani

Milani Lashes | Cils Milani

This will be a review not like the others, meaning that instead of listing the PROs and CONs as I usually do, I’ll rant about as I please. Why? Because I can.

Let us begin with Power Lash Volumizing Mascara…

While loving the wand that reminded me of my beloved DiorShow, I was disappointed with the outcome. The promises of curling, volumizing and thickening did none of those on my lashes. With that in mind, I’ll definitely use this mascara on shoots that call for a natural look. I would also recommend this mascara for anyone that sports blonde/red lashes and wants to look as though they aren’t wearing anything at all. Personally, I prefer a mascara that coats just enough without looking like I’m wearing makeup.

Next up is Distinct Lash Mascara…

This was a different story. While the wand reminded me of Rimmel’s Flirt, I was skeptical as in the past I do like a thicker bristle application. The black goo was very liquid-y and I was afraid of smearing. The promise of lengthening was kept, however separating was a not-so-much. The rubbery bristles are spread too far for my lashes to separate them. Bottom lashes were a different ballgame, hence I’d recommend this mascara to anyone with shorter hairs. I fear of smearing never came true. Phew.

Perhaps using the Distinct Lash first followed by Power Lash will achieve what it is I am looking for. Perhaps Power Lash should come in brown (which gives the illusion of fullness). Either way, they only cost $6.49 a pop – try them out and prove me wrong! I like this.

Find them here.
