Top 5 Eyeliners and how to use them.

My mum’s been wearing the same makeup for as long as I could remember.

Mother. Au naturel…bar the liner/mascara. Don’t tell her I posted this because she’ll always find something wrong with it.

When I was a little girl I sat watching her intently every morning while she applied those two jet black lines on her eyeballs. This always followed by mascara, naturally. Which always followed by de-clumping with a needle. A fucking needle! Mind you, back in the day, in what was the Soviet Union, the mascara she used came with a brush so big that would be better maneuvered around a shoe; the pot of mascara wasn’t far off either.

La_Femme_Cake_Mascara

Not too far off from something like this cake mascara. Apparently they’re still around for those that love to build up their lashes.

Anyway, she was so quick and proficient with these liner flicks that it looked easy enough for anyone to do. Years later, now residents of the US, I got my little hands on mum’s American liquid liner and decided to give it a go while she was away at work.

Fail.

Determined to make it happen, I would spend hours of class time in high school, particularly my Biology class with Mr. Beeftink (such a great name) painting mine and anyone else’s face. Practicing. Perfecting.

There was a moment I thought I was Gwen Stefani, wore track pants and crop tops and thought white liner peeking right above black liner was the shit. I swear I’ve seen people try to do this in the past year and it makes me pee my pants.

Now, I can’t imagine life without eye liner…

Clearly I’m a fan of red lipstick too.

There are so many textures and ways you can manipulate them. Under shadow or above it. Fat. Skinny. Long. Geometric. Metallic. Gel. Cream. Top. Bottom. Whatever position you like, my dear. The list goes on and on.

Some of the beauties I’ve lined.

Without further adieu, here are my faves:

smashbox-jet-set-waterproof-eye-liner

Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner – gel liner that was recently reworked. This stuff is just plain fucking awesome. Though it stays on through tears and sweat, you can always manipulate from a sleek line to buffing a smokey texture. My recent fave is the Dark Brown which is amazing on hazel and blue eyeballs. $22

Merle Norman ProPenEyeLiner

Merle Norman Pro Pen Eyeliner – is just like using a marker/pen. It glides on super smooth and leaves the perfect line. Having something so easily maneuverable is perfect for anyone looking for liner practice. It only comes in Sharp Black  and it really is just that, sharp. $15

Milani Liquid Eye – can be found at your local Walgreens/CVS/Target. Brownie point numero uno. Fits into every budget – 2 points. Their blues are electric and glide on beautifully – 3 points. Won’t smudge – 4 points. Paraben-free – gold star. $6.99

Cos25b_1_Large

L’Oreal Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner – is what my mum wears every day. It’s what I used to wear when eyeliner came on my teenage angst-y radar. A drugstore staple. Great for sensitive eyes and lasts up to 8 hours. $9.79

_6811886Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Primatif – my all time favourite pencil liner. I’m obsessed with the way this bad boy glides on and stays. My leaky water line has never created crease goop in the corner of my eye after wearing it for hours like some others. Dark like a kohl and available in 7 colours. $26

If you don’t wear eyeliner because you are afraid to look like an earthquake hit when you were applying, here are some tips:

  • don’t try to create a long line, shorter staccato strokes will do the trick
  • if your eyes naturally slant downward on the outer corners you probably shouldn’t wear liner on the water line because it will accentuate the droopyness, but you’ll definitely benefit from a cat eye
  • white liner on the water line widens smaller eyes
  • take a q-tip to your liner [not liquid] and smudge for a softer look
  • when applying, keep your eyes open if you can so that you can balance both sides of the face
  • have fun, you won’t learn any other way

Lashes | Cils

You know that running joke between guys about how girls are all fake…heels make us taller, makeup makes us more attractive, hair colour, push-up bras, etc.? Well, I love it.

Here’s another one to add to their collection: LASHES!

There is an astronomical number of girls who love the way falsies look but don’t have the faintest idea of how to apply them, so they stay far far away from attaining great lengths.

The first step is not to be afraid of poking yourself. If you have tremorous motor skills, begin with practicing sans makeup – otherwise you’ll be crying and reapplying indefinitely.

You will need:

  • Lashes – find ones you like, I recommend starting slow and picking out a length not much longer than your natural.
  • Lash Glue – I prefer anything that is not clear (black is my favourite) as my reaction to it is a brilliant burning sensation.
  • Scissors – to cut the lashes down to the length of your eye.
  • Tweezers – to apply the lashes without smudging glue all over your visors.

Instructions:

  1. Measure the lashes to your eye.
  2. Trim excess.
  3. Apply a drop of glue to the top of your hand.
  4. Slide the base of the lashes across the glue.
  5. Blow on the glue for 15-30 seconds to harden it.
  6. Grab hold of the middle part of the lashes with tweezers and apply to the center of your lash line as close to your lashes as possible.
  7. Grab either corner and repeat last step.
  8. Using the other end of the tweezers move/pat down the lash line to ensure they stick.
  9. Apply mascara to both your natural and false lashes.

Voila!

Options:

  • Use lash tips or individuals and apply them to the outer corners of the eyes.
  • Line your eyes (on top of the falsies) with liquid liner for more drama.
  • This look is lovely when paired with a colourful lip unless your shadow is dark.

Ebay has amazing deals on sets of 10 for under $2!!!

Be you a fair maiden, a sultry caramel queen, and everyone in between – a bit of coral rouge can do wonders if the rest of you is sans makeup. Coral runs pinky/orange and compliments 99% of all skin tones.

No matter the size of your puckers, they should always remain under lustrous arrest. A dab of sheer pink gloss will bedazzle onlookers and keep your cabana boys mesmerized.

Pour Inna…

So my mom called me last night and told me that her “adopted daughter” in Florida has been keeping tabs on my tutorials and was wondering what is the strange white goo I lather my lashes with before mascara.

Your answer lies herein, my dear.

Behold! Lancome’s Ă”scillation Powerbooster Lash Primer.

The coat is even, lengthening and thickening. It’s a great primer with conditioners to keep your lashes from getting crusty. And it vibrates! Though not for long.

This product lasts quite a long time and surpasses most lash primers I’ve gotten my hands on in the past.

Go get yours!

Pour Elana…

For most girls who wear makeup MAC is probably all they know.

Yes, the eyeshadows are lovely, the lipglass is yummy and the blushcreme stays on all day. But why bind yourself to one brand?

First off you’ll have to invest in a good primer:

Laura Geller Spackle Lip & Eye Primer. Doesn't move or crease. Your makeup is going nowhere once this is on.

And here are some of my personal favourites:

MAKE UP FOR EVER matte shadows are my new friends, although the diamond line is also divine.

Dior Sunset Café is just easy and stunning. If in a hurry - the opalescent pink shade works well by itself on nearly any skin tone.

Smashbox Palette in Strobe is also a quick fix to any night out. It'll make your eyes sparkle even if you don't want them to.

Kat Von D True Romance palette is just fabulous. The colours are true and the combinations endless.

Medusa’s Circle (which used to be an awesome punk boutique in Chicago) has eye dust shades that will blow your mind and not your wallet. I’ve been a loyal fan of their line since they had about five available. They closed down the clothing shop almost two years ago to strictly dedicate themselves to makeup…and they’re great at it!
